What You’ll Learn in the Series:
- Week 1: Music Royalties & Basic Agreements
- Learn about the different types of royalties—mechanical, performance, digital, sync, and print royalties—and how they impact your income as an artist. We also cover essential contracts like split sheets, producer agreements, and work-for-hire agreements to ensure proper documentation and clarity for all collaborators.
- Week 2: Copyrights & The Big 3 (PROs, SoundExchange, MLC)
- Understand the difference between SR (Sound Recording) and PR (Performing Rights) forms, and why registering your music is so important. This week focuses on setting up your PRO writer and publisher accounts, registering with SoundExchange for digital performance royalties, and using the Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) for digital mechanical royalties.
- Week 3: Hidden Platforms, Aggregators & Metadata
- Learn how to use platforms like Mediabase, Harry Fox, and Music Reports to track radio airplay and ensure you’re collecting royalties from every possible source. We also dive into the importance of embedding metadata (ISRC, ISWC, UPC, etc.) to properly track your music and ensure you’re getting paid.
- Week 4: Bringing it All Together
- In the final week, we put everything into action with a mock contract and registration process. We’ll answer any lingering questions and help you apply everything you’ve learned to your music career. You'll leave this session with actionable next steps and a clear path forward.
